On 13 April 1919 a large unarmed crowd gathered at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar. General Dyer sealed the only exit and ordered his troops to fire without warning, killing and wounding a great many people. The massacre destroyed whatever faith Indians still had in British justice, and it brought Gandhi to the leadership of a mass movement.
