Germinating seeds are kept in a conical flask fitted with a cork carrying a small test tube of potassium hydroxide solution and a bent tube dipping into coloured water. As the seeds respire they use oxygen and the carbon dioxide given out is absorbed by the potassium hydroxide, so the pressure in the flask falls and the coloured water rises in the tube.
