The Doctrine of Lapse annexed states such as Satara, Jhansi and Nagpur whose rulers had no natural heir, which alarmed every Indian prince. The annexation of Awadh in 1856 on the ground of misgovernment angered its people and its many sepoys. The Mughal emperor was told that his successors would have to leave the Red Fort and would not be recognised as king.
