The activities of Christian missionaries and the fear of forced conversion alarmed both Hindus and Muslims. Social reforms such as the abolition of sati and the legalisation of widow remarriage, however desirable, were seen as interference with religion. The Religious Disabilities Act of 1850, which allowed a convert to inherit property, deepened the suspicion, as did racial arrogance towards Indians of every class.
