Diazonium salts have the general formula ArN2+X− and are made by treating a primary aromatic amine with nitrous acid at 0 to 5 °C. They are important because the diazonium group is readily replaced by a great many others — halogen, cyanide, hydroxyl, hydrogen — so a wide range of substituted benzenes can be made from one amine, and they also couple with phenols and amines to give azo dyes.
