What are western disturbances and how do they affect India?
Climate of India
Original Khojo Papers practice question — not from a past board paper.
In summer the landmass of northern India heats up strongly and a low pressure area develops over the north-west, while the Indian Ocean remains comparatively cool and has higher pressure. Air therefore moves from the sea towards the land. These moisture-laden winds cross the equator, are deflected to the right by the Coriolis force, and reach the subcontinent from the south-west. On striking the Western Ghats and the Himalayas they are forced to rise, cool and give heavy rainfall.

The reversal of pressure and wind direction between summer and winter is the defining feature of a monsoon climate.
