Red soil forms from the weathering of ancient crystalline and metamorphic rock, and its colour comes from iron oxide. It is porous and friable, poor in nitrogen, phosphorus and humus but reasonably rich in potash, and it becomes productive with fertiliser and irrigation. Groundnut and millets grow well on it.
