Blood enters the glomerulus through the wider afferent arteriole and leaves through the narrower efferent arteriole, which raises the pressure inside the glomerular capillaries. This high pressure forces water, glucose, salts, urea and other small molecules out of the blood and into the Bowman's capsule, while blood cells and plasma proteins are too large to pass through and are retained. The fluid collected in the capsule is the glomerular filtrate.
